Marseille's birthplace
In 600 BC, the Calanques were occupied by a Celtic-Ligurian tribe: the Segobriges. At the same time, Greeks from the city of Phocaea on the Aegean Sea, fled from Persian attacks. They withdrew to their Mediterranean trading posts, including in Lacydon calanques where the old port of Marseille is now located. The meeting between the Segobriges and Phocaeans is at the heart of the legend about the foundation of Marseille, in which Voire fountain played a key role.
